Virtually everything we do is to change the way we feel, yet most of us have little or no training in how to do this quickly and effectively.

Pain and pleasure shape our destiny

We deal with our emotions either through avoidance, denial, or carrying it as a ‘badge of courage’ to outweigh other’s problems. We go to great lengths to avoid feeling certain emotions such as using drugs, alcohol, overeating, gambling, and collapsing into deliberate depression.

You can’t run from your emotions, you can’t tune them out, you can’t trivialize them or delude yourself about what they mean. Nor can you allow them to run your life.

The only way to effectively use your emotions is to understand how they serve you

A much more powerful approach in dealing with emotions is to

  • realise they serve a positive purpose and
  • make them work for you

Emotions are like an internal compass that points you to the action you must take to achieve your goal. The emotions you see as negative are merely a call to action; so instead of looking at them as negative, rather let's call them Action Signals. Once we understand each signal and its actions, our emotions become your ally, friend, mentor, and coach; they’ll guide us through life’s most soaring highs and demoralizing lows.

Action Signals Messages

  • They’re telling you what you’re currently doing is not working
  • The reason you have pain is either the way you perceive things, the way you’re communicating your needs and desires to people, or the actions you’re taking. For example, depression is telling us to change our perception that the problems you’re dealing with are permanent or out of control

You are the source of your emotions – you create them

Too many of us leave ourselves at the mercy of outside events and rely on short-term quick fixes.

To overcome our emotions we need to identify which emotions are empowering, which are disempowering, and how to use both kinds to our best advantage so that our emotions become a powerful tool in helping us achieve our highest potential, instead of being a hindrance.

One of the most important decisions we can make to ensure long-term happiness is to decide to use whatever life gives us in the moment.

The truth is there’s nothing we can’t accomplish if we

  • Decide what it is that we’re absolutely committed to achieving
  • We are willing to take great action
  • We notice what’s working and what’s not
  • We continue to change our approach until we achieve what we want, using whatever life gives us along the way

The power lies with you to choose how you want to feel at any moment!
